Family Holiday Packing Guide — How to Choose Luggage for a Family of 4

How much luggage does a family of four need for a holiday from the UK? It depends on trip length, who can carry each bag and, above all, the baggage allowances on your actual bookings. Start with the journey, not a fixed number of cases.
Before buying or packing, check each traveller's booking confirmation and the operating airline's latest baggage rules. Confirm the included and paid under-seat, overhead and checked bags, full external dimensions and packed-weight limits. Children's and infants' allowances can differ from adults' and by fare. Check all flight legs, and do not assume that weight can be pooled between family members.
Plan the bags you can manage
For a weekend, a shared checked case plus smaller bags might suit a family that has purchased the right allowances. For a week or two, separate cases may help with organisation, but there is no universal rule that a family of four needs two medium cases, two large cases or a four-piece set. Write down what you intend to pack, weigh it, and consider how many bags you can move through stations, transfers and airports while supervising children.
Is a luggage set worth considering?
A matching set can give you a choice of case sizes for different trips. It is not automatically cheaper than buying only the cases you need, and a case labelled “cabin” is not automatically included in any family member's fare. Compare the current set price with separate cases, check each piece's actual size and features, and plan where unused cases will be stored. A vanity case is not an extra free bag simply because it comes in a set.
Picking a bag for each family member
For children, choose a bag they can comfortably manage, or one an adult can carry when needed. Compare its full external dimensions, including wheels and handles, against the specific allowance on that child's booking. Do not assume a 15–19-inch label means it fits under a seat or in an overhead locker. Browse our cabin-size selection and compare the listed measurements with your booking.
For adults sharing a checked case, check the permitted weight per bag as well as what each person is allowed to bring. A large case offers room but can become heavy to lift. An interior divider or packing cubes may make shared contents easier to organise.
Practical family packing tips
- Use a packing cube or separate compartment for each traveller's clothes.
- Keep essential medication, documents and a suitable change of clothes accessible in bags your booking permits you to carry aboard.
- Weigh packed cases at home, and leave room within the limits for the return journey.
- Put heavier items low in a wheeled case if its design allows, and check it remains easy to handle.
- Attach identification securely and avoid displaying more personal information than necessary on the outside.
- Choose hardshell or softshell based on the individual case's construction and your packing needs; neither shell type guarantees protection.
What to compare when shopping
Look at each case's empty weight, dimensions, wheels, handles, interior layout and any listed lock or expansion feature. Expansion may push a bag beyond its allowed size. Check current product specifications rather than assuming every piece in a set has the same features.
Browse luggage sets or individual hardshell cases for current price and availability. Delivery offers and returns terms can change; check the current details at checkout before ordering. Travel Smarter with Neil's Luggage Store.
